Anchorage, Broome Jetty, Pindan dunes in background. Because of present wharf security pedestrian access to the anchorage side is not permitted. Hard to avoid the further railing from marring the photo. Lugger is almost certainly Willie. 8650
Roebuck Bay Art - Vol 3
Being 12 months recently since my amazing 3 week road trip up north to the Kimberleys, I re-visited some of the many images I shot up at this stunning region of the world. And I found this image which I thought needed to be added to my list of Art Series pieces. It's an aerial shot over the spectacular Roebuck Bay, with the striking red pindan dirt famous in the Kimberleys, contrasting against the brilliant torquoise waters of the Bay and green mangrove trees, with some nice beach rocks thrown in.

2-3 Jul 1959 RNZAF Bristol Freighter became unserviceable at Broome, WA. The crew stayed at the Roebuck Bay Hotel. Above photo taken before undergoing major improvements in the 1970s.
41 SQUADRON UNIT HISTORY - JUNE 1959
14 Jun 1959 F/L Grigg and crew departed Changi and pioneered a new route through Australia to New Zealand. From Bali they staged through Broome, Alice Springe, and Charleville to Amberley. The route takes an extra day, but enables a greater payload to be carried between Changi and Whenuapai. On the return flight the aircraft became unserviceable at Broome for two days (2-3 Jul 1959). In spite of a sterling effort by LAC Lovell to repair the components with the limited resources at hand, spares had to be brought in from Changi.
2 Jul 1959 S/L Tosland departed Changi for Broome with spares for the unserviceable aircraft.
During their stay, the crew, in the best 41 Squadron tradition endeared themselves to the loca1 populace. A hotel, formerly the Roebuck Bay, as renamed "The Kiwi Arms" in their honour. Whether this is a shrewd move on the part of the Aussies to capture the booming beer business or purely out affection for the crew's cheery personalities remains in doubt.
However the publican did go out of his way to entertain everyone, even to the extent of a fishing trip to Willy's Creek, 60 mile from Broome. A letter of appreciation has been sent by S/L Tosland.
